In the 18th and 19th centuries British convicts were shipped to Australia, and 25,000 of them were women. The Exiles imagines the stories of two of them, along with that of an orphaned Aboriginal girl. Celebrating the bonds between women, the novel explores how lives that seem destined for pain might persevere.
