Special COVID-19 News Update

Over the decades, the Woman’s Club of Wilmette has weathered many challenges including the 1918 pandemic, World Wars, stock market “adjustments,” and our own local crisis with the 2015 Clubhouse fire.  Because of our strong connections to one another and our community, we will also outlast COVID-19. Time and time again, we are reminded that the positive sounding club motto, “Progress is the law of life” is both proactive and reactive. Progress is forward or onward. Progress can be bittersweet.

While our pace has slowed dramatically, it has not stopped.

We are happy to report that the WCW building interior reconstruction thoughtfully continues, and is almost complete. The Phoenix crew is onsite carefully following OSHA COVID-19 guidelines. We are also holding board meetings and Reader's Circle meetings online through Zoom. While we are not meeting in person, we are still maintaining our connections to each other by embracing technology.

We instinctively understand that maintaining connections and community is critical during these uncertain times. We continue to support our local resources in their efforts. Our village, chamber and local service agencies are regularly updating available information. Please check wilmettekenilworth.com for the most up-to-date information.

The Village of Wilmette has launched a Community Caretaker Program to provide extra support and assistance to our vulnerable and at-risk residents, including the elderly and residents with disabilities. Residents who are unable to leave their homes and need help with obtaining essential items, such as groceries and medicine, can submit a request through the Village Manager’s Office by calling (847) 853-7502 or emailing Alex Arteaga.

Our members, friends and neighbors are using social media to support, motivate and comfort each other. Life Coach Kathy McCabe (2017) has created a “Calm During Chaos Sisterhood” Facebook group. Visit Kathy's Website to sign-up and receive on-line community support as well as live video chats. Christine Quinn (2019) has an at home "Remote Reboot" program and is also posting health and wellness resource tips on Facebook. Visit Christine's website for more info. Cynthia Klobuchar (2019) and Julie Lipford (2019 have led the way for sidewalk chalk time and bear hunts in the Harper neighborhood. If you are passing through, take the time to read the hopeful messages, enjoy the drawings and spot teddy bears in windows and trees. Kay Malm (2007) and Peggy Prescott (2019) are making face masks for medical professionals and WCW members. Please contact them if you would like one, or to pick up fabric to make your own. Michelle Baby (2019) and her family are providing a yard sale fundraiser to support and thank healthcare and essential workers. To purchase a sign, donate $10 and arrange a non-contact pickup here. So many wonderful, caring people are offering their time and talents for the community!

We look forward to the day we can unveil our beautiful new clubhouse to the Wilmette community and resume our commitment to providing a community space for all to enjoy.

Until then, stay safe and be well.

Edie Rowell and Stefanie Rupp
Woman's Club of Wilmette Co-Presidents
