February brings us Valentine’s Day and a new twist on a love story. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout explores the nature of love, especially the sometimes complicated love between mothers and daughters, in “My Name Is Lucy Barton.” The emotional landscape that Strout paints for us includes both deep suffering and simple, unabashed joy; furthermore, she does it all without getting bogged down in sentimentality. This short novel was named a best book of the year by over a dozen media outlets, including The New York Times Book Review, Kirkus Reviews, and National Public Radio. It is soon to be a Broadway play starring Laura Linney.
